Prometheus Copper Clay 200grams
How to achieve positive firing outcomes
Prometheus Copper Clay is a claylike material which turns into pure, solid copper when fired in a kiln. It is a mixture of micron sized copper powder, water and an organic binder.
Prometheus Copper Clay can be formed by hand, rolled into a sheet or made into a rope. It can be moulded, textured and even turned on a potter's wheel.
Prometheus® Copper Clay can be fired with most lab-created gemstones (cubic zirconia) pre-tested natural stones, glass, glass beads, ceramic and porcelain.
When the clay is fired in a kiln, the organic binder evaporates and burns away. What remains is pure, solid copper.
If there is any fire scale left on a piece after firing, it can be placed in a pickle solution to remove it. The solid copper piece can then be wire brushed and polished.
Create unique jewellery, ornaments, hollow ware, statutes, sculptures and many other decorative objects.
Use your imagination and let your fingers do the rest!
Prometheus Copper Clay can be fired in a single or two-stage firing.
SINGLE STAGE Prometheus Copper Clay Conventional Firing
Preheat your kiln to 820ºC
Place your dried copper piece onto stainless steel mesh and into the kiln
Wait for the kiln to reach temperature and fire for 30 minutes
After 30 minutes, remove the piece and leave to cool on a heatproof surface. Alternatively quench in water BUT NOT if fireable gemstones or glass have been included in your design.
TWO STAGE (recommended, most successful method) Prometheus Copper Clay Activated Carbon Firing
Place your dried piece(s) onto stainless steel mesh, and into a kiln at room temperature
Wait for the kiln to heat up to 500°C and fire for 15 minutes
Once finished, remove the piece and leave to cool on a heatproof surface
Preheat your kiln to 820º
Pour 3cm of activated carbon into a stainless steel container and position pieces at least 1.5cm apart.
Cover with activated carbon and place steel container inside the heated kiln
Wait for the kiln to heat back up to 820º and fire for 60 minutes
After 60 minutes, remove the piece and leave to cool on a heatproof surface.
HAND HELD TORCH FIRING Prometheus Copper Clay Torch Firing
When Prometheus Copper Clay was first introduced, the hand held torch firing method was widely recommend. For valid reasons, it is no longer the manufacturers recommended firing method.
However, it must be mentioned that with perseverance, small pieces of Prometheus Copper (maximum 2.5cm and 25mm thickness) can be successfully fired with a handheld gas torch.
Prometheus® Jeweller's Sterling White Bronze Clay can be combined with Prometheus Bronze Clay and Prometheus Copper Clay and fired with the same kiln firing schedule.
Annealing: If your combined pieces are thin and long, then it is recommended that you anneal your pieces in order to maintain high strength and malleability.
Annealing. Heat your pieces at 565°C for 5 minutes and quench in water.
