Art Clay Copper 50 grams

Art Clay™ Copper is a base metal clay material that you can use to make a wide range of pieces such as jewellery, craft designs, and larger sculptures.

Art Clay™ Copper can be fired in an electric kiln without being embedded in activated carbon.  A correctly fired Art Clay™ Copper piece will be 100% pure copper.

Art Clay Copper only requires a 30 minute 970C kiln firing time. To limit or exclude oxidisation Art Clay™ Copper can be fired embedded in activated carbon or sandwiched between ceramic fibre blanket.

Mokume Gane       Video

Art Clay Copper and Art Clay Silver can be combined to make lovely Mokume Gane effects  (Mokume Gane "a Japanese metalworking procedure which produces a mixed-metal laminate with distinctive layered patterns")
A video link to this method is included.

In comparison to silver, firing base metals is known to be challenging. This is especially true with a hand held butane torch. When Art Clay™ Copper was first introduced, the torch firing method was widely recommend. For valid reasons, it is no longer the manufacturers recommended firing method.

However, it must be mentioned that with perseverance, small pieces of Art Clay Copper (maximum 2.5cm and 25mm thickness) can be successfully fired with a handheld torch.

We have included the hand held torch firing method below and included a video link for those who may be interested in trying this method.

If Art Clay™ Copper feels a little dry out of the packet, roll it out and "paint" a small amount of water over the surface with a soft paint brush. Fold the clay over and knead well.

Repeat the process if necessary, until you are happy with the consistency.

Add oil or balm sparingly to hands and tools but not to the clay itself. Too much oil and balm mixed into the clay can cause it to crumble

Art Clay™ Copper should be kept well covered in a cool place when not in use (NOT refrigerated). Keep the raw clay well wrapped (Sandwich wrap/Cling Wrap) to protected from drying.

Exposure to air/oxygen will cause the clay to oxidise and blacken.

Like many of the base metal clays, Art Clay™ Copper can stain hands/fingers during use. Use Gloves in a Bottle or other similar products to prevent this.

Art Clay™ Copper does not come in paste form but it is easy to make paste from the clay. We recommend making Art Clay™ Copper paste only when it is needed. Add only small amounts of water to create paste. Art Clay™ Copper Paste should be used very thick so only ever add limited drops of water to make paste. Thin, watery paste will be wasteful and effective.

Due to oxidisation, we do not recommend making and storing Art Clay™ Copper paste.

Place piece no larger than 2.5cm 25mm thickness (using no more than 25g weight) on a firing brick.

Heat evenly until cherry red for at least 7 minutes.

Pieces 10g or less and 1mm or less in thickness can also be fired for at least 7 minutes.

Larger pieces up to 25g and 2.5mm thick can be fired for 10 minutes.

Immediately after firing is complete, quench in cool water so that most of the oxidized layer pops off to reveal perfect copper beneath.

Always take extreme care and be extra cautious during all types of firing metal clay.
