** The term "Thickness" when working with the contemporary clays is often spoken as “cards thick”.  This refers to how many playing cards thick the clay should be when rolled out. Playing cards were stacked on top of one another and became the original form of thickness measurement used. No matter where you live now, clay crafters still understand and speak the same language. Despite the passage of time, most manufactures of thickness slats and frames, still use the term “card thickness” and will also include the equivalent millimetre measurement
